I read a fascinating article recently about the concept of a “work martyr”; someone who is eager to gain recognition for their work by working long hours, refusing to take breaks and just generally running themselves into the ground in order to sacrifice themselves at the altar of career.
It made me wonder if that was me. I am incredibly passionate about my job, loyal to my company which I am very proud to work for and certainly dedicated to working long hours but I can’t say I do it for the recognition.
I do it for the personal satisfaction of achieving something for myself and for my company. I have always been of the opinion that someone who works none-stop is nothing but a busy fool. With proper time-management and organisation there should be no need to work outside the contracted hours regularly so I wouldn’t expect any recognition for that, especially when I work for a company dedicated to making other companies more effective through the provision of training.
I am guilty of taking on far too much, definitely – that goes with the territory of being eager to please! But the pleasure that I take in my work lends itself to the adage “if you do a job you love, you’ll never work a day in your life”

The worst kind of work martyrs are the ones who genuinely believe that they are indispensable. It could very well be true but it’s no way to live your life. Ask yourself what would happen if you were hit by a bus tomorrow? Does that make you want to immediately put contingency plans in place? Or does it make you feel strangely relieved because the pressure you’re putting yourself under has no place in this scenario.
I can see how people fall into a self-perpetuating cycle if they are a work martyr. After all once you start giving 110%, you’ve set the pace and it must be hard to stop. Managing the expectations of our colleagues, customers and stakeholders at work is one thing, but challenging a preconception of what you are capable of delivering? Not so much.
The line that’s hard to cross back from replica watches, is being too focused on work. When your job is your passion – how do you switch off from it? That has always been my problem and I don’t have an easy answer for learning to let go of the things that are important to me. I’ve reached the stage in my life where I am happy with my career – I know exactly what I want to do and how to do it and better still it’s plausible – someone is willing to pay me for doing the job I love and in return I am willing to give it everything I have. The British airline’s new service could be a blessing for business travelers who want to stay connected during eight-hour flights across the ocean. It could also be a nightmare for the passenger sitting next to them.

Passengers today already wrestle for control of the armrest and the few precious inches of personal space they have. It isn’t clear how the flying public will react to phone calls mid-flight.
George Hobica, founder of AirfareWatchdog, says Virgin will have to restrict times of day when passengers can make calls in order to not wake up fellow passengers on overnight flights.
“But you know what will happen, no one will listen. There will be screaming matches, glares, and probably fisticuffs,” he said in a statement. “I for one would gladly choose an airline that bans inflight yakking over one that allows it.”
The New York-London route is very lucrative and competitive.
British Airways and American Airlines have teamed up to offer up to 16 daily flights between the two cities. Virgin only offers five a day, with plans to soon expand to six.
Asked how his airline can compete, CEO Steve Ridgway told The Associated Press last week: “By offering better service.”
This new phone service is part of a larger $160 million dollar upgrade of the airline’s Upper Class cabin, although it will be also available to passengers in coach. Calls are not permitted during take-off or landing or within 250 miles of U.S. airspace.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., took a bipartisan stance on foreign policy in a speech today at the Brookings Institute, burnishing his credentials as a possible running mate for Mitt Romney as he called for greater U.S. engagement in international affairs.
“For while there are few global problems we can solve by ourselves, there are virtually no global problems that can be solved without us. In confronting the challenges of our time, there are more nations than ever capable of contributing, but there is still only one nation that is capable of leading,” Rubio said of the United States.
“Who will lead if we do not?” Rubio asked. “The answer, at least today, is that no other nation or organization is willing or able to do so.”
Rubio said that he disagrees with not only President Obama’s administration’s handling of certain foreign policy matters but also certain members of the Republican Party who call for a scaling back in U.S. engagement abroad.
“I disagree with voices in my own party who argue we should not engage at all. Who warn we should heed the words of John Quincy Adams not to go ‘abroad, in search of monsters to destroy’,” Rubio said.
Rubio hit foreign policy hot topics, from Iran developing its nuclear capabilities to the secrecy surrounding China.
“We hold out hope for a new China of tomorrow, but for now we must deal with the China of today. A China which enjoys its closest relationships with countries such as North Korea and Iran. Rubio called for a more active role in taking down the government of Bashar Assad in Syria, which he believes would be “a significant blow to Iran’s ambitions.”
Rubio relayed his disapproval of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin’s handling of his country, saying he “might talk tough, but he knows he is weak. Everywhere he looks, he sees threats to his rule, real and imagined.”
“I know some here might disagree, and certainly the president would, but I feel like we have gotten precious little from Russia in return for concessions on nuclear weapons. The reason is because Russia’s domestic politics shape its foreign policies. An autocratic Russia tends to be more anti-Western, and to act in ways that make it harder to integrate Russia into the global economy and free international political order,” Rubio said.
Rubio touted American ingenuity, which he says has allowed democracy to spread across the world, specifically citing the power of Twitter and YouTube.
During a question and answer session, Rubio discussed the need for foreign policy to operate in a bi-partisan zone.
“I always try to keep foreign policy non-partisan as much as possible. I think it weakens our hand in the world, and maybe it’s because I’m new here,” Rubio said during a question and answer session following his speech.
Rubio, a 40-year-old freshman who serves on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the Select Committee on Intelligence, is at the top of many vice presidential pick lists, and his speech Wednesday displayed his knowledge of and involvement in foreign policy, a factor that could help him if Mitt Romney’s team vets him for the number two spot on the Republican ticket.
Rubio campaigned with Romney, who many consider to lack foreign policy experience, on Monday for the first time at a stop in Aston, Pa. and endorsed him last month.
Sen. Joe Lieberman, Ind.-Conn., who traveled with Rubio to Libya last year and co-authored an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal calling for greater involvement in the country, introduced Rubio as a “rising star” in the next generation of foreign policy, saying that Rubio holds a “steadfast belief in the importance of American leadership in the world and his understanding of how much that leadership determines our security and well being here at home.”
Earlier in the month, Rubio traveled to the Summit of the Americas in Colombia, where he met with a number of Latin American presidents and Cuban exile leaders.

Back in August, in the wake of General Motors emergence from its pre-packaged bankruptcy, the automaker gave select members of the media a preview of several upcoming products. Among those was the next Chevrolet Aveo, which will take up the B-segment mantle to battle the new Ford Fiesta, Mazda2, Honda Fit Tattoo Supplies, and Toyota Yaris. Unlike the current Aveo, which is built in South Korea by Daewoo, the new model will be built at the Orion, MI assembly plant north of Detroit.
While there had been speculation that the ungainly-looking Chevy Viva from Brazil would be the Aveo replacement, that is an entirely different car – although it will likely share some mechanical bits with the Aveo.
At the August preview, GM design manager Bob Boniface confirmed to us that the Aveo moniker would be retained because, in spite of the baggage the current model carries, it does have recognition and launching a new nameplate has been deemed too expensive a proposition. Of course, that was three months ago and the Aveo is still a year or so away from launch Tattoo Supplies, so things could change. Osama Bin Laden in a video released days before the 2004 presidential election

Another inheritance from Lenin was the notion that a hard-line enemy was better for mobilizing supporters than one who played down animus.

The Chevrolet Aveo RS concept received a fairly warm reception at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show. The question now is how closely will the production version adhere to what we saw in decidedly unsunny D? Here are some fresh spy shots of the production Aveo to help us answer that.
